New job for Kevin with the RAF

Published on 14 May 2015 09:00 AM

Kevin Fulthorpe - who was forcibly retired by the Army on his 61st birthday is celebrating after landing a new job.

Super-fit Kevin - an Army physical training instructor for 25 years, is now working for the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

It comes after Age Cymru heard about Kevin's plight and helped him to get his story heard by a global audience of millions.

Says Kevin:

"I was feeling really down after being retired by the Army, but Age Cymru heard about what had happened to me and helped give me a voice on a scale that I could never have imagined.

"I made headlines across the world - my story and a video of me talking about my experiences went viral and appeared on websites as far afield as Singapore and Ghana"

"Then I got a Tweet from 614 Squadron saying ‘Age is just a state of mind. We are looking for PTI reservists in Cardiff. Interested?' - I couldn't believe it!"

Kevin is now Sergeant Fulthorpe of 614 (County of Glamorgan) Squadron and is training new recruits.

Commenting on Kevin's new role, our Chief Executive, Ian Thomas says:

"This is fantastic news -a match made in heaven between Kevin and 614 Squadron.

"Kevin's example clearly shows that age is just a number - not an indication of a person's abilities.

"Society needs to move away from old-fashioned ideas about age and ageing and this is why we need to help older workers like Kevin to stay in employment and find new work opportunities."
