Over 50s need job opportunities

Published on 16 July 2015 10:30 AM

Age Cymru is welcoming calls from the National Assembly for Wales's Enterprise and Business committee for policies to improve job prospects for over 50s.

Our Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis says:

"Remaining in work or finding a new job when you're over 50 is still a significant challenge for many people and age discrimination in employment is widespread.

"Older people are often denied training and employment opportunities because of stereotypes based on inaccurate assumptions about their ability, capacity and competence due to their age. In fact, Age Cymru's research shows that 21% of people aged between 50 and 64 feel they have experienced discrimination in employment.

"We strongly welcome the Enterprise Committee's recommendation for a drive to tackle age discrimination in employment so that all older people who want to work have the opportunity to do so.

"We would also like to see the Welsh Government seriously explore options to ensure that people over 50 looking for work can access support and training opportunities."
