P is for People

The Welsh Senate of Older People wants your help with its campaign to protect public toilets in Wales.

Public toilets are an essential part of our communities.

They are vital in ensuring that people retain their dignity and the confidence to participate in community life.

Poor public toilet provision can reduce people's ability to remain active and restricts how often, and for how long, they are able to leave their homes.

Public toilets in Wales are increasingly at risk of closure.

The British Toilet Association estimates that the UK's public toilets have declined by over 40% in the last decade.

There is currently no statutory duty on local authorities to provide public toilets in Wales.

The Welsh Senate of Older People (WSOP) thinks this is wrong and needs to be addressed.

This is why WSOP has developed the P is for People public toilets campaign: we want people of all ages across Wales to be confident that they will be able to find a toilet, when needed, if away from their home.

We have developed a Campaign Toolkit to support local groups to improve public toilets in their area.

WSOP has distributed around 200 toolkits so far, and there are more available if readers would like to join in and support the campaign in their area.

The next exciting stage of the campaign is a Day of Action on Wednesday 16 November 2011 at 10am at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay.

We want as many people as possible to come along and lobby the National Assembly of Wales, so that real improvements to public toilets are seen in communities across Wales.

The rally will be held between 10am and 11am on the steps of the Senedd, to give as many people as possible the opportunity to show their support.

If you would like to attend the Day of Action please contact Kathy Lye on 029 2043 1555 or via email at kathy.lye@agecymru.org.uk for full details of the day.

If you are not able to attend, but would still like to support the Day of Action and the campaign, please do get in contact and we will be able to support you to take part.
