Physical activity

Published on 06 February 2012 10:30 AM

"It's never too late to start being more physically active" - that's the message from Age Cymru today.

We're launching a new guide for over 50s called ‘Physical activity', which is aimed at people who have never taken part in regular physical activity before or been inactive for a while.

The guide is full of handy tips on how to improve your physical and mental wellbeing.

Our Physical Activity Development Officer Glenn Little says:

"It's never too late to get started and people of all ages can benefit from physical activity.

"The greatest benefits of taking part in physical activity are gained when you start taking part in regular physical activity, even if you've not done any exercise for a while.

"You'll notice the difference as soon as you begin and the physical and mental effect of regular exercise can help manage health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes."

‘Physical activity' contains ideas for increasing your activity levels and keeping it fun, as well as looking a ways you can add exercise to your day-to-day routine.

The guide examines the physical and psychological benefits of regular activity and it also contains information on how much exercise you should do.

There is a section in there about useful contacts, including information about Age Cymru's Nordic Walking programme and Low Impact Functional Training (LIFT) physical activity programme.

Glenn Little adds:

"Being active can help you maintain your mobility and independence so that you can do the things that you want to do and live life to the full."

He concludes:

"Remember to check with your doctor before you start any new health routines and ask if there's an exercise referral scheme in your area that you may be eligible to join."

‘Physical activity' is available for free by contacting Age UK Advice on 0800 169 65 65.
