Postage stamp price rise

Published on 28 March 2012 08:30 AM

Responding to the news that stamp prices are to go up, with first class stamps increasing in cost from 46p to 60p, and second class stamps rising  from 36p to 50p, Victoria Lloyd, Age Cymru's Director of Influencing and Programme Development says:

"With more people sending emails and relying on technology to communicate nowadays, this increase in the cost of stamps is perhaps inevitable.

"Our concern however is that it is the people who don't have access to technology - or are unable to use modern technology to communicate and stay in touch , and are already struggling on a low-fixed income, are the ones who will be hardest hit by these substantial price rises.

"As society moves increasingly towards providing information and accessing services online, we need to make sure that older people are given the opportunity to learn about using technology and shown how it can be relevant to them in their day-to-day lives.

"We must also ensure that no-one is disadvantaged because they are unable to - or choose not to  access technology, and ensure that information and services are available to them in alternative formats."
