Protecting vulnerable adults from abuse

Published on 19 December 2014 12:00 PM

Our Head of Policy, Graeme Francis, has today commented on the new Welsh Government law to report suspected risk of abuse by police, health staff and other workers from 2016;

"We welcome the Welsh Government's announcement today about changes in the law to protect vulnerable adults from abuse.

"This new legislation is an essential component of safeguarding adults, setting out statutory powers and duties to be undertaken by all key agencies.

"Our Rule Out Abuse Campaign has called on the Welsh Government to make these changes and to commit to protecting adults at risk of abuse.

"We are pleased that the changes we have been calling for will now be made law from 2016.

"Unfortunately, evidence indicates that thousands of older people across Wales are the victims of abusive treatment every year.

"We believe that this new law will help protect people by strengthening adult protection procedures with robust duties for local health boards, NHS and service providers."
