Proud to support LGBT History Month

Published on 27 February 2014 02:00 PM

February marks Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month, which we're proud to support.

We were invited to celebrate the month at an information and awareness raising event in Barry Library, joining Stonewall Cymru, Transgender Wales, Terence Higgins Trust and Race Equality First.

Rachel Lewis, Network and Project Officer, who attended the event says;

"We are proud to support LGBT History Month, learning more about the histories of LGBT people across the UK and Northern Ireland.

"This positive networking event gave us the opportunity to make new contacts and learn new ways about how we can support older LGBT people.

"By representing older LGBT people we aim to offer a safe space for voices to be heard and to influence the Welsh Government.

Dee Jenkins, Chair of Transgender Wales and member of Age Cymru's Older LGBT Network, marked this celebratory event after receiving her gender reassignment certificate and new birth certificate earlier that week.

Our Older LGBT Network also seeks to spread examples of best practice and challenge discriminatory practices.

The Network recently discussed the need to increase positive recognition of older LGBT people and their sexualities among
staff and residents in care settings.
