Supporting government campaign against scams

Published on 13 January 2014 03:00 PM

Age Cymru welcomes the launch today of Cyber Streetwise, a government campaign led by the Home Office.

The campaign aims to significantly improve the online safety and confidence of consumers by sharing helpful tips such as creating strong passwords and how to bank securely online.

Our Scams and Swindles campaign shares similar aims, calling for more protection for older people from criminals who ruthlessly rob them through a variety of scams.

The campaign recently received a big boost from the National Assembly for Wales when a Statement of Opinion was raised by Assembly Members for older people to receive more protection against scams and doorstep crime.

Gerry Keighley, Campaigns Coordinator said;

"We welcome the Home Office's new campaign to raise awareness of scams faced by consumers online and strongly believe more should be done to ensure older people's safety.

"Through our Scams and Swindles campaign we are calling for internet service providers, among others, to provide more protection for older people, including offering higher security levels and blocking access to known offenders".
