UK Government mid-term review

Published on 07 January 2013 04:00 PM

Commenting on the UK Government's announcement today of new measures in its mid-term review, Age Cymru's Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis says:

"Age Cymru welcomes the commitment from the UK Government to introducing a new state pension and fairer care funding - these are both major issues which affect all of us, and where improvements are badly needed.

"Whilst there has been no further information today on the detail of either reform we are pleased that they form central elements of the UK Government's agenda between now and 2015.

"We are calling for Governments in Westminster and Cardiff to implement a new paying for care model as a priority, to end the current uncertainty which restricts people's ability to plan for their care needs, and results in some people losing everything to pay for essential care.

"A simpler, more generous state pension is also urgently needed to ensure a reasonable standard of living for people in retirement and to better protect older people from poverty."
