Winter Fuel Allowance

Published on 05 September 2011 11:00 AM

Responding to reports in the media today about cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance, Age Cymru spokesman Iwan Rhys Roberts says:

"Winter can be a difficult time for older people, both physically and financially.

"For those living in poverty and struggling to live on tiny incomes, the additional costs they face at that time of year of having to heat their homes puts an added strain on their already limited finances.

"This is why the Winter Fuel Allowance is a lifeline.

"Our very real concern is that these cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance, coupled with recent increases in energy prices could see more older people than ever in South Wales this winter faced with the dilemma of having to choose between heating or eating."
