Comment on the drop in bus mileage in Wales13 February 2018

Age Cymru’s Interim Chief Executive Victoria Lloyd said: “The apparent drop in bus mileage in Wales over the last decade is a real worry for us, particularly if, as we suspect, the cuts centre on the less profitable routes in our more isolated communities.

Many older people rely on their local bus services to visit shops, health and social services as well as meeting friends and relatives.  Without a decent and reliable bus service older people can become lonely and isolated which can be detrimental to their overall health and well-being.

Older people are more reliant on the bus than other age groups but they are less likely to cope with poor quality or infrequent services. We would urge local authorities, the Welsh Government and transport operators to come together and help ensure that older people throughout Wales remain connected to their communities.

Ends.
