Joint statement on COVID-19: Age Cymru and Older People’s Commissioner

Published on 17 March 2020 02:41 PM

Following yesterday’s announcement that the government is advising people over the age of 70 to limit social contact, many older people and their families will be concerned about the impact this could have, whether on themselves or their loved ones.

But it’s crucial, at this difficult and uncertain time, that people of all ages continue to follow the latest government advice, as we all have a role to play in helping to delay the spread of the virus and in minimising the risk to themselves and others.

We’d like to remind older people and their families that they can still get in touch with us and we will provide all the help we can. We will also continue to share the latest information from the government via our websites and social media channels as this becomes available.

We are in regular contact with the Welsh Government, to ensure that the latest information and guidance for older people is communicated effectively, and that plans are in place to ensure that crucial services, such as domiciliary care, will continue to be delivered.

We will also continue to monitor the government’s response and action being taken, and will raise concerns and call for further action should we feel that this is not sufficient to protect older people.

The response by communities so far has been outstanding and the support being provided is already making a positive difference. If there’s an older person you know who may need help or support – with shopping or collecting prescriptions, for example – or would benefit from having someone to talk to, then get in touch with them or pop a note through the door as this could make all the difference.

There will also be a range of initiatives being delivered by community-based organisations and volunteers throughout Wales, so make sure to also follow updates from them to find out what’s happening in your area.

There is no getting away from the fact we are living through a period in which we will see unprecedented change and disruption, potentially for a prolonged period. But alongside this, we are confident that we will also see the very best of people and our communities as we all try to navigate the difficult path ahead and ensure that older people are kept as safe as possible and can get the support they need.
