Pop up cinema event to celebrate positive ageing

Published on 12 November 2019 10:48 AM

Age Cymru is hosting a pop up cinema event at the iconic Penarth Pavilion in October to showcase a range of films celebrating older age.

It will feature A Walk in the Woods starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson, and Mary Steenburgen, a film is based on Bill Bryson’s autobiographical book that traces his return to the USA after spending two decades in England, and where he decides the best way to connect with his homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends.

The event, which forms part of the charity’s Age Positive Week, will also feature a series of short films including one inspired by the interaction of artists with care home staff and residents, produced by BAFTA award-winning Clare Sturges.

Members of the audience will also have an opportunity to take part in a discussion, led by Film Focus Wales’ Nigel Streeter, on how older people are represented in the film industry and how older people can get involved in community based film making.

Age Cymru’s Kelly Barr says “We recognise that visiting the cinema is a popular way of engaging in culture and learning about the wider world, but there are very limited realistic depictions of older people on screen. Hopefully, this event will encourage many older people to think about how they want to see themselves represented and to continue to enjoy meeting up with friends to see films in their local cinema.

“It would be fantastic if we could also encourage some older people to get involved in community based film making so that their voices are heard and aspirations are better reflected.”

The event, sponsored by Western Power Distribution, is free of charge to attend and takes place at the Penarth Pavilion on Wednesday 2 October 2019 between 1pm and 4.30pm.  To reserve a place call 029 2043 1555 or visit www.agecymru.org.uk/agepositive

Ends.
