How do we make things better ?

Experiences from the Derbyshire Dales Housing Options Service help Age UK’s campaigning, policy development and our work with local and national planning and strategy development.

How do we work ?

The Housing Options Service started in the Derbyshire Dales with a funded pilot more than a decade ago and Derbyshire Dales District Council continues to fund the service in the district.

The Housing Options Service has been recognised for its contribution to older people’s wellbeing by supporting them to make well-informed and successful choices about where and how they live.

Age UK Derby and Derbyshire delivers the service because we can offer the reassurance of a free, confidential and independent service designed with older people.

Help to Move Service

Advisors in the Housing Options Team will identify clients who could benefit from the Help to Move Project working with the Support Worker to agree outcomes and monitor progress.

Our experience shows some people need more hands-on practical support than Housing Options Advisors can provide, without which they cannot achieve their goals or are delayed. The Help To Move support worker can assist by resolving practical barriers to moving which may include help with the process of putting their property up for sale, finding a new property, organising removals, arranging a house clearance, dealing with down-sizing, decluttering and low-level hoarding.

For a new property to become a home, older people may also need timely financial support to help them install/clean a carpet; install a cooker or washing machine; or make essential alterations and installations. We support clients to secure grants and loans but these can take a long time or they may not meet the criteria for small but vital expenditure to make the move a success.
