Volunteer

Our volunteers are the best advert for what volunteering can do for you. All our volunteers say their regular volunteering keeps them active, gives them social contact and an opportunity to use the skills developed over a lifetime. 

Our regular volunteers help us provide our services, raise funds and promote our work. We could not operate any of our services with the support of dedicated, talented and enthusiastic volunteers.

All of our volunteer roles are subject to an application process including two references. For roles that involve work directly with older people you will be subject to a Disclosure & Barring Service check. We keep our process as simple as possible and we can help you complete your application. Once successful we will introduce you to the project worker who will help to set up and supervise the placement.

Full training is provided for every role. This training can be from a supervisor or manager or formal external training depending upon the role you undertake and your existing skills.

Ingrid, has volunteered with Age UK Derby and Derbyshirefor the past 2 years in the Matlock area, and she says “When I read that loneliness, especially among the elderly, is a greater problem then poverty today, I was keen to help”. Ingrid had recently moved house, so because of distance, had to give up prison volunteering which she had found rewarding and fascinating. “I was looking for something more local, and Age UK’s recruitment for the Befriending Service struck a chord. It seemed a simple activity which would be very helpful. “I have been visiting local people. We go out together sometimes and they enjoy visiting me from time to time. In between the visits I talk on the phone to them. I think it has made quite a big difference to those who I have visited, especially when new problems arise and I am able to offer some help. It certainly seems a very worthwhile service and I would recommend it to anyone who has some time to spare and is interested and likes being around people.”

We also have a Board of Trustees who work as volunteers to govern our organisation, giving their life and work skills to help develop Age UK Derby and Derbyshire into the future. Our Programme Boards have volunteer opportunities for advisors on work including service development, organisational development and income generation.
