Uber has supported Age UK to be here for the older people most in need during the coronavirus pandemic - from helping to fund our vital work, to helping us deliver meals, medicines and assisting older people to get to vaccination appointments.
The coronavirus pandemic has been extremely challenging for millions of older people across the country. Many have spent over a year shielding, missing out on seeing loved ones, some have struggled to access even the basics like food, medication and healthcare.
Uber kindly donated £200,000 to help Age UK be here for older people, both during the pandemic, and now as we start the long journey back to normality.
This donation could help the national charity continue vital research and campaigning, help us respond to the increased demand for information and advice through our Advice Line and website, and help us continue to give companionship and support through our national Telephone Friendship Service.
In addition, Uber covered the cost of hundreds of journeys to staff and volunteers at local Age UKs, so they could deliver food and medication to older people, particularly those who had recently returned home after stays in hospital and needed that bit of extra support.
Most recently a number of local Age UKs across the country have also been able to use donated Uber ‘rides’ to help older people get to vaccination and medical appointments.
Getting to a medical or vaccine appointment during the pandemic can be a huge source of worry for vulnerable older people. Working in partnership with Uber has allowed Age UK to give older people in these local areas a safe and secure way to make these journeys.
"I am 101 years old and live alone in a flat in East London. I am attending a retinal clinic for eye injections to preserve what little sight I have left. I have had one injection and am to have a further three at 4 weeks intervals. It would be impossible for me to attend the clinic but for the supply of an escort from Age UK and without the transport provided by vouchers from Uber. It is very public spirited of Uber and I am extremely grateful."
This is just one of the many ways Age UK continues to support older people during this pandemic. We can only continue to do this with the help of our supporters.
