I volunteer because I think of all the older people out there who have no friends or family to talk to. It must be so lonely, so just to get a call or a visit from a befriending volunteer can brighten up their day.

I also get pleasure from knowing I have made a difference.

I have been a befriending volunteer with Age UK Hillingdon, Harrow and Brent for 20 years. I have enjoyed home visiting, however have also helped with one off tasks too when I have time.

I would recommend volunteering as a Befriender as a very satisfying and interesting experience, always with the friendly back-up of the Befriending Team.

I have gained wealth of knowledge from just talking to the clients, learning about their lives and events they have experienced during their lifetime.

It has made me think about my life and the importance of making a record of the events you regard as special recording them in print otherwise those memories will be lost

I find volunteering with Age UK to be hugely rewarding - both for myself and for the service users that I help.  For example, through the Befriending Service I was paired with a man whose care company was refusing to take him shopping and who was unable to get out of his flat in the case of a fire.  I was very pleased when I was able to solve both of those problems for him.
