Case study - Supporting Mrs S to fill-in forms, make applications for a Blue Badge and additional financial support and lessening her anxiety
When our Age UK Isle of Wight Living Well team first met Mrs S, she was encountering difficulties getting out and about independently as a result of arthritis and severe anxiety.
Our Living Well Support Worker had initially been called in to help Mrs S complete a Blue Badge application, but it quickly became clear over a cup of tea and a chat that Mrs S was also having some financial struggles. As she was not confident in form-filling, which was contributing to her anxiety, our Support Worker arranged to return again to Mrs S, in order to assist her in completing a Council Tax hardship form, and Discretionary Housing Benefit form. Our Support Worker handed in the completed forms on the same day.
Mrs S commented that she would not have been able to complete and submit the forms had she been left to do this alone, and that having someone to support her through the process had greatly lowered her anxiety levels. The help that Mrs S received was such that she referred a friend to the Living Well team who she felt would benefit from the same support.
