Carers' Discussion with the Mayor of Islington

In this last year, people across Islington have continued to face new challenges in providing regular support for family members or friends as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

We’re honoured to be joined by The Mayor of Islington, Cllr Janet Burgess on 24th March for a discussion to explore the challenges that carers have experienced in providing regular practical or emotional support for a family member or friend in the last year.

We’ll also be discussing the community connections and other things that carers have found effective in helping them to cope. So we’re also going to be talking about the positives!

What are we going to discuss?

We want to create an open discussion to reflect on the last year to:

• Think about the things that have worked well – in terms of new connections, support that’s been welcome, new ways that you’ve discovered of doing things and any positives that have resulted from what has been an incredibly difficult situation for many. 
• Also discuss the frustrations and difficulties that you’ve experienced in providing regular support for family members or friends.
• How you’ve found any connections within your local community with respect to your caring role – with neighbours, fellow carers, local support services.

• Meet others providing regular help and support to family or friends 
• Hear from the Mayor of Islington, who herself has personal experience of being a carer
• Hear from other carers and what they've found helpful
• Help identify if there are any gaps in support 
• Feed into a communications piece which will be shared (with your consent) to benefit other carers

Young Carers in Conversation with The Young Mayor of Islington

This is one of a series of two discussion groups that will be taking place in March.  There will be an earlier Discussion Group on Thursday 18th March, 11am - 12.30pm, which will be co-hosted by Young Islington Mayor, Rosie Kurnaz for young people with caring responsibilities.
