Getting ready for the cold weather, which can start as early as October, means you are more likely to keep warm and well this winter.

Here's a list of things you can do to help ward off the winter chills

  • Have your heating system serviced and chimney swept
  • If you have wood-burning, coal or gas heaters -make sure you have adequate ventilation
  • Check with your energy supplier for further advice to help you prepare for winter
  • Check your water stopcock is working properly
  • Have your electric blanket serviced - this should be done at least every three years
  • Make sure your smoke alarm is working
  • Make sure you claim all the financial support you can to help with heating bills. Your local Age UK can advise you
  • Be sure you have some warm shoes or boots with non-slip soles
  • Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy weather
  • Keep simple cold, flu and sore throat remedies in the house. Your pharmacist can make suggestionsand can also advise on how to manage minor illnesses
  • Follow up your GP's invitation to have a flu jab
  • Order repeat prescriptions in plenty of time, particularly if bad weather is forecast
  • Keep basic food items in the cupboard or freezer in case it's too cold to go shopping
  • If you smoke, think about trying to stop

More Money In Your Pocket

Very few of us would refuse extra money to help us pay the bills, have a more comfortable retirement and be able to treat our grandchildren.


However, many of us are missing out on extra money each week simply because we don't know what we are entitled to, or because we don't claim what's rightfully ours.

That's why Age UK has launched the More Money In Your Pocket campaign - to help us claim all the money we are owed.

Last year‚ Age UK helped put more than £100 million in unclaimed benefits in the pockets of those of us in later life and our carers‚ and we plan to do even better this year.

There is nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Hungry To Be Heard

The Hungry To Be Heard campaign focuses on older people's meal-time experiences whilst in hospital.

For many of us in later life, a stay in hospital can be made worse by hospital meal-times being an unpleasant experience. 

Problems experienced by patients are:

  • Food trays being placed out of reach
  • No help given with cutting up food or opening lids on difficult containers
  • No help or encouragement is given to us to eat and drink, and food trays are taken away untouched without any questions

A relaunch of this campaign took place in August and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are working alongside Age UK to ensure malnutrition becomes a thing of the past in our hospital wards.

Cheque writingCheque Replacement Programme

The Payments Council, who represent banks on payments systems, has proposed that cheques should be replaced with a new payment system by 2018. 

After a grilling from the Treasury Select Committee and strong advocacy from organisations like Age UK, the Payments Council has promised that cheques will not be removed until an alternative system which meets the needs of users, including older users, is available. 

Age UK continues to be concerned to make sure that the alternative system really meets the needs of those who rely on cheques. We are conducting research, including an international review and deliberative research with older peoples forums to help inform our work. 

We would also greatly appreciate readers views on how the removal of cheques might affect their lives and about what qualities are most important in any alternatives proposed. We see the proposed cheque replacement as part of wider issues on how well bank accounts work for older people.

We also welcome letters and emails on issues readers encounter with current accounts, for example, telephone banking, use of powers of attorney and third party mandate, access to cash, etc.
