Catherine House provides activities, care and social opportunities for older people with a strong emphasis on the needs and preferences of the BME community.

Catherine House in the sunshine

All of our resource centres offer a range of activities, services, support and facilities which respond to the needs of local older people. They are open to the public and free for you to visit. We are always looking to increase the activities on offer and welcome your ideas for what you would like to get involved with at Catherine House, either as a client or a tutor.

What is a community resource centre?

Community resource centres offer a space which is geared (but not limited) to the over 50’s. The centres each have facilities, services and activities which meet the needs of the local area. Each one has carer-supported day care in a separate, private area alongside community areas which offer classes, activities and lunch clubs or a restaurant.

The centres are accessible, welcoming, safe and offer a place for older people to meet, eat, learn, get active and socialise.

What activities are available at Catherine House?

Catherine House offers several exercise classes across the week which offer something for everyone who would like to get fitter.

  • Tai Chi
  • Pilates
  • Yoga

We also have daytime groups you can join which focus on a hobby or interest – and we’d be pleased to hear from you if you have ideas for other groups you’d like to start.

  • Sewing and needlework
  • Hindu ladies singing group
  • Scrabble group

You can see our full timetable of activities here.

Most of our classes and activities are run by external tutors and whilst there is a charge for participants, it is minimal. If you are a tutor looking for a venue in Leicester to run your activity, please get in touch with us.

What events are happening at Catherine House?

Across the year, we provide opportunities to celebrate festivals and traditional days including Diwali, Eid, Christmas and Vaisaki. Please check back here for future events.

What other facilities and services do you offer?

The centre also has:

  • Information and Advice drop-ins every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm
  • Lunch clubs
  • Day care groups with accessible transport if required

Information and Advice Drop-in

Our Information and advice drop-in can help you with anything which affects your later life from housing and property, money and legal matters through to local services, leisure and social activities. The drop-in runs every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm and offer free help from multi-lingual advisors.

Lunch clubs

As food often tastes better when cooked for you, and it’s always a treat to be waited on, why not come along to our lunch clubs which run Monday through to Thursday every week. They are tailored to the needs of older people who are physically active and not in need of daytime care but who may be at risk of loneliness or social isolation. We offer freshly cooked, Asian vegetarian and Halal meals. You can meet and dine with friends, or come along and make new friends.

Day care

Catherine House hosts day care which provides carer-supported help for older people who are experiencing physical frailty or mental health issues, living with dementia or learning disabilities. Travel to and from the groups is possible using our accessible minibuses. For more information about this service and how to access it, please visit our day care page.

When is Catherine House open?

The centre is open on weekdays from 8.30am to 4pm and you are welcome to visit us during those hours to have a look around and see what we have to offer. Some of our activities run outside of these hours and the centre is open just for those attending the activity (for example, Pilates and the Hindu Ladies singing group).

Is it free to visit Catherine House?

Yes. The centre is open to the public and is free to enter. If you wish to participate in activities, classes or services there will be a charge for this.
