We are launching our winter campaign to highlight the issue of loneliness in later life. We need support from local people and organisations to help us fight isolation.
Across Merton it is estimated that 8,000 older people are lonely. These feelings are far more prevalent in the winter months, as the nights draw in and the weather worsens. If you live alone and have no family nearby there is often no one to share a cup of tea with, no one to look after you if you get a winter cold and no one to share Christmas Dinner. In fact every day can feel like the last.
Loneliness is an epidemic sweeping across the UK which is as harmful to the health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. We don’t think that this is acceptable – No one should have no one!
At Age UK Merton we put reducing social isolation at the heart of every service we provide. Whether it is the wonderful Elmwood Centre which has over 350 people every week joining together for lunch, yoga, zumba, art, gardening, bingo and scrabble to name a few, our at home services and befriending, or our advice and practical support to keep people healthy, safe and well enough to keep socialising. Everything we do is to ensure older people love later life rather than view it as something to be endured.
However we can’t afford to do this without the support of the local community and we are asking you to donate to our winter campaign No one should have no one to support older people in Merton this winter.

As a small local charity you can be assured that whatever the size of your donation it will be very much appreciated and make a difference to your local community.
