Age UK Milton Keynes is a separate business from the national charity Age UK. We are not linked to their shops in any way.
At the end of March 2018, on a turnover of £1,103,010 from the shops we made a contribution to charitable activities of £307,557. As a percentage this is 28% or, rounded up, 28p in each £1. The rest was used to pay business rates (reduced), rent and utilities, fuel, insurances and salaries.
The national average for charity shops is 19p in every pound goes to charitable activities, so Age UK Milton Keynes is above the average. As well as making the largest contribution to support Age UK Milton Keynes' services our shops also:
- provide rent-free high street accommodation to our free Information and Advice Service
- employ over 65 people and support the local community
- enable over 180 local people to volunteer, staying active and meeting new friends as well as giving something back to their community. We also offer work placements and support back into work to young people and vulnerable adults.
Our shops are a place where people can find out about the services and support the charity offers to older people in Milton Keynes.
At a time when funding has all but disappeared, press articles that cast doubt on the integrity of charity shops are destructive and unnecessary. Age UK Milton Keynes shops are professionally run, successful and without the hard work and dedication of our shop workforce Age UK Milton Keynes would not be operating.
