The Mayor of Milton Keynes addresses the gathering

Age UK Milton Keynes and representatives from local organisations gathered together on Sunday 1st October to mark International day of Older Persons.

Older Person's Champion Jan Lloyd, the Mayor of Milton Keynes Cllr David Hopkins and representatives from the Milton Keynes Pensioners Association joined Sue Graham, chariman of Age UK MIlton Keynes board of trustees, to brave the weather and celebrate the contribution of older people around the world.

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons.

The Mayor of Milton Keynes  speech emphasised that the need to tap into the often over-looked and under-appreciated contributions of older persons is not only essential to their wellbeing, but also imperative for sustainable development processes for Milton Keynes.

Jan Lloyd quoted Andrea Brandt, saying that "If you see old age as a time when you stop doing and stay still, you won't get to experience all the joys of being human."

Local musician and activist John Pemberton gave a short musical performance.

After the short ceremony participants walked over to Age UK Milton Keynes' welcoming Snack & Chat cafe in The Food Hall above Iceland, to enjoy tea, coffee and cakes.
