Keen cyclists Phil Marler and Mark Adcock from Norfolk and Suffolk based Insurance Brokers Hugh J Boswell have smashed their fundraising target of £110 which was set out by the firm to celebrate their 110th anniversary year. The pair have raised £1,151 so far by circumnavigating Suffolk and Norfolk on their bikes, starting and finishing in Lowestoft, and all in the space of 2 days!
Phil and Mark set off in July having cycled over 300 miles and stopping overnight in Feltwell. They also made a visit to the charity’s shop in Sheringham en route where they also had a well-deserved short break with family.
Helen Chapman, Fundraising & Events Manager who met Phil and Mark at the shop on Friday said: ‘We are incredibly grateful to them both for taking on such a huge challenge. It was a pleasure to meet Phil and Mark and say thank you in person for going more than the extra mile for older people across Norfolk’.
The money they have raised so far could fund around 200 telephone befriending calls to isolated and lonely older people. The difference the service makes is explained by one of the call receivers: “I am very happy with the calls from John. Regular calls are so appreciated as I get so lonely. It’s nice to be able to talk to somebody regularly especially when you are so lonely."
Age UK Norfolk, which is in the run up to its 70th anniversary year, provides an information and advice service from the local charity shop in Sheringham where the pair stopped and the charity provides a range of services including telephone befriending, dementia services, information and advice and home care and support.
