HandyVan Service

HandyVan worker

HandyVan was a programme that improved quality of life and provided peace of mind to older people by making their homes more safe and secure.

Many older people need some support to remain living independently in their own homes. The Age NI HandyVan service helped boost their confidence and independence and reduced the risk of loss through burglary.

HandyVan provided and fitted a range of safety and security products in older people’s homes, including:

  • Smoke alarms
  • Door chains
  • Mortice locks and bolts
  • Window locks
  • Door viewers
  • Locks for uPVC doors and windows

In 2008 Community Evaluation Northern Ireland (CENI) was appointed to carry out an external evaluation of the HandyVan Service in Greater Belfast. The report can be downloaded below.

As funding has now ended, we are no longer able to provide support via the HandyVan service. However, our Advice and Advocacy Service continues to offer independent and confidential support to older people, their families and carers.
