School fundraising

School pupils wear a hat

We encourage children to understand the challenges that older people face and think about how valuable older people are to communities. There are lots of opportunities for schools to support our work and help us fundraise.

Spread the Warmth at school

A staggering 83% of older people living alone in Northern Ireland experience fuel poverty - your school can help Age NI improve life for older people during winter by Spreading the Warmth. Take a look at how to get involved:

Grandparents Day

  • 97% of people agree that grandparents add value to family life in Northern Ireland*
  • Almost 60% of people know an older person who spends up to 16 hours per week looking after their grandchildren**

To celebrate Grandparents everywhere, we will be releasing balloons throughout Northern Ireland around Grandparents Day, Sunday 2 October. Your school may release balloons from their school yard, or you could take part in a mass balloon release hosted by Age NI. Each balloon costs £2 to release, and Age NI aims to release 5,000 balloons, raising £10,000. Help us reach our target! Register for a fundraising pack at or telephone 028 9024 5729.

Wear a Hat Day!

Invite your pupils to wear their hat in school for a day to make them think about staying warm in winter. Whether it’s a bobble hat or a panda hat for a suggested donation of £2 your pupils get to accessorise their school uniform, raise money for Age NI and increase awareness of the issues faced by people in later life.

Visit our publicise your event page to find out how to generate local media coverage about your Wear a Hat Day activities. We would also love to see photos of the children in their hats! Post them on our facebook or flickr pages, or email your photos to  we will feature them.

Sponsored silence

54% of older people tell us that loneliness is a huge problem for them.  Host a sponsored silence in your classroom and think about older people who sit in silence everyday, with no one to speak to or keep them company.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands is a great way to get children involved in their community, help them learn responsibility and raise money for people in later life.  Children print a pair out of 'helping hands' and fill the hands up with coins that they earn by doing odd jobs for people.  Tasks for children include:

  • Tidying their bedroom
  • Gardening
  • Helping set the table
  • Folding all their clothes up at the end of the night
  • Keeping a neighbour company

Assembly plans

We have created interactive assembly plans for infants and secondary school pupils which you can use to get children thinking about the older generation and the difficulties they may face.
