Ann Corbett is in her 60s and volunteers every Thursday at Anna House day centre in Dunmurry.
Anna House is a home from home. Many older people have told me it’s the highlight of their week to go and have a conversation with friends, join in the activities and enjoy a great lunch into the bargain!
I enjoy my role - greeting everyone as they arrive, helping them to settle in and serving their morning cuppa. There’s always an activity in the morning like crafting, bingo, sing song, armchair aerobics or a quiz. I help to serve lunch, make sure everyone is ok, then clear up and take part in an afternoon activity.
I’d previously been involved in fundraising for Age NI ever since a charity partnership was formed with my then employer Danske Bank in 2014. Having worked full time in banking for over 40 years, I took early retirement in March 2015. I was approached by my line manager, who visited the centre previously, about volunteering at Anna House. He thought I‘d love it, that it would give me something to do. He was right!
I started volunteering in April the same year, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time ever since. It’s so rewarding to sit and enjoy a conversation with the older people - they are so appreciative of what is done for them.
Anna House is a valuable asset to the local community, enabling people in later life to get out and socialise rather than becoming isolated, staring at the same four walls, day in and day out. I’m jumping out of bed every Thursday morning, eager to get to ‘work’ at Anna House. It's great to feel appreciated by the older people and by Gillian, day centre manager and Barbara and Justine, care workers. I’d recommend this role to anyone with spare time on their hands. I look forward to many more years volunteering at the day centre.
