Charlotte Friars is in her 80's and has been volunteering at Age NI’s Laurelhill day centre in Lisburn, supporting people to live well with dementia for over 22 years.
‘I volunteer on Monday and Friday - there’s always something to occupy my time. I accompany people on and off the bus and ensure their seatbelts are securely fastened during the journey. I do dishes, make tea, and assist during day trips and outings which I really enjoy. Sometimes I take part in fun activities and games. Volunteering at Laurellhill gives me a reason to wake up everyday. I love meeting people and I’ve made so many friends. Just because I am older doesn’t mean I can’t be useful! I love the feeling I get from being able to help others less fortunate than myself.’
Mrytle Johnston, Day Centre Manager, said, 'Laurellhill could not function without the dedication of volunteers like Charlotte.'
