Avid charity fundraiser and volunteer Drew Murray from Antrim shares his experience of volunteering with My Life My Way, a project helping to make later life better for people with dementia and those who care for them.
'I work for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council and normally fit my volunteering in during the evening.
'I visit John once a week and I could not have been matched with a more suitable person. John and I will take a walk for around 40 minutes which gives his wife time to enjoy her favourite soap on TV.
'During one visit, John mentioned that he used to play football for a well known team. I've since spoken to a club rep who is popping by John’s house soon to give him a collection of historic photographs – it'll be a nice surprise!
'Now that the nights are getting darker I will change my visit to a Saturday morning. This will give John’s wife the chance to spend time in the kitchen which she enjoys.
'Sometimes I'll drive by a local Tesco and pick up five yellow bananas and five green bananas, something their son used to do before he moved away. John's wife confided to me that although I’m there for her husband, she looks forward to my visits and really appreciates my help too.'
'Small, positive changes like these make a big difference to this older couple's life. You too could help older people in your area to live well with dementia.'
