Yvonne McMorris

Yvonne McMorris from Derry-Londonderry is an Age NI Volunteer Peer Facilitator. Yvonne tells us what motivated her to start volunteering for the charity and what she enjoys most about her role.

Volunteer'My mum was in care for the last 6 years of her life. During this time, I got to see the good side of the care system, and a few things that concerned me.

'What shocked me most was how quickly people become institutionalised and unwilling, or unable, to speak out about issues that matter to them.

'It was almost as if they no longer had the power to make changes, however small, to their lives. As a peer facilitator, I can help older people to have a voice again.

'Before this, I was a Vice Principal in a primary school and took early retirement. I wanted to do something completely different with the free time I had and the role of the Age NI Peer Facilitator suited perfectly. It provides me with wonderful opportunities.

I enjoy getting out and meeting and talking to older people - so many of them have wonderful stories to tell.

'I love later life. I’m staying active and involved through courses with U3A. I enjoy yoga, gardening and also fundraise for other local charities.'
