Community safety

Crimes against older people are devastating however older people are statistically less likely to be victims of burglary than the remainder of the population.

There is a wider societal impact that must be addressed:

  • 66% of older people believe fear of crime is the biggest problem facing older people
  • 22% of older people believe fear of crime is the main barrier to engaging with their communities
  • 17% of older people feel trapped in their own homes

Age NI believes in a prevention agenda to be achieved with:

  • Community support
  • Integrated rapid response
  • Policy attention

Age NI calls for:

  • Police, politicians and wider communities to take positive action on this important issue
  • Government to use more innovative measures to address fear of crime among older people
  • Safer Ageing: A Strategy & Action Plan for Ensuring the Safety of Older People is a step in the right direction and we call on government to ensure that the action plans contained within the strategy deliver tangible improvements to the lives of older people across Northern Ireland.
