Age NI welcomes plans from Nigel Dodds MP to put forward a Bill in the House of Commons today entitled ‘Support and Protection for Elderly People and Adults at Risk of Abuse’.

Anne O’Reilly, Age NI Chief Executive said, ‘This Bill is a positive step forward in dealing with elder abuse. Age NI currently works in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society on Uniting against Elder Abuse (UAEA), an initiative which provides independent advocacy for older people and those with dementia as well as raising awareness of the problem of elder abuse.

'All too often issues of abuse are complex and under reported - our work has shown that there is little formal contact between statutory agencies and services, and support for those reporting elder abuse is often uncoordinated and fragmented. 62% of the clients Age NI has worked with reported that they had no contact with social services.

'New legislation would address the current complexities of dealing with elder abuse cases and would support greater coordination across statutory agencies.’
