Being kind doesn’t cost a thing, but it can make someone’s day, and as a result of a joint initiative between Age NI and NIE Energy, it could also make a big difference to the lives of older people throughout Northern Ireland.

This winter Age NI and NIE Energy have joined forces to promote the Acts of Kindness campaign, to encourage people here to spread the warmth, by performing a small gesture of kindness towards older people in their community.

It doesn’t cost a thing – just do something kind for an older person, tell us about it on the NIE Energy website, opens link in new window and NIE Energy will donate £5 to Age NI!  That’s all you have to do.  This money will enable the charity to provide advice, support and practical services to help older people to stay warm, healthy and connected during the cold winter months. An act of kindness can be any small gesture to show you care, like calling in with an older person on a regular basis, even if just to say hello, or offering a lift to an older person who doesn’t drive.

Anne O’Reilly, Chief Executive of Age NI said, ‘It doesn’t cost to be kind, but the Act of Kindness campaign can have an economic benefit for vulnerable older people, as well as encouraging real warmth towards older people in our society. While many of us may have older relatives, friends, or neighbours who are warm, well and in touch, the fact remains that 83% of older people living alone in Northern Ireland are experiencing fuel poverty.  It is imperative that we do all we can to help spread the warmth and promise to do an act of kindness to our older family, friends and neighbours to let them know we care.

Stephen McCully, NIE Energy Managing Director added, ‘NIE Energy is delighted to be working with Age NI to promote the Act of Kindness campaign which we hope will have positive impact on older people who may be lonely, anxious or in poor health this winter.  We are keen to encourage as many people as possible to offer a small act of kindness to an older person. In return, NIE Energy will donate £5 to Age NI for each act.  It will only cost you a minute of your time! As well as this practical help, we would like as many people as possible to see if they qualify for our free home insulation offer.’
