Linda Robinson, Age NI Chief Executive commented, ‘We welcome today’s announcement of the appointment of Eddie Lynch to the role of Commissioner for Older People in Northern Ireland. We are all aware that our society is ageing, and that this simple fact presents many opportunities and challenges.
We already know that ageing in Northern Ireland is an unequal experience. Many older people lead active and fulfilled lives, playing important roles in families and communities across Northern Ireland. We also know that many older people face daily challenges which they tell us strip them of their dignity and deny them their rights as equal citizens.
In this context, the statutory duties and powers of the Commissioner’s Office are vital to ensure that the rights and interests of older people are protected and promoted, and to hold to account those responsible for driving systemic change in policy and services across Northern Ireland. We look forward to working with Eddie in his new role, and to supporting his direct and meaningful engagement with a diverse range of older people from all walks of life in Northern Ireland. We will be seeking an early meeting with him in order to shape and influence the Commissioner’s priorities so that Northern Ireland can become a great place to grow older.
