National Treasures Wanted

Published on 03 October 2017 10:30 AM

RTÉ and the National Museum of Ireland are developing a unique public history project documenting the story of Ireland over the last 100 years using ordinary objects treasured by families across the country.

National TreasuresNational Treasures is a campaign to collect objects cherished by people and families that explore the history of the island of Ireland over the past 100 years. The aim is to gather objects, which reveal an aspect of Ireland's history, culture and experience, and to create an online archive.

The producers are particularly keen to get objects from Northern Ireland to make the archive inclusive, and to tell the widest range of stories possible.

On October 22nd 2017 there will be a public roadshow in Belfast where curators from the National Museum of Ireland will see the objects in person and assess their potential to be 'national treasures'. This will be televised next year, and a range of objects will be chosen to be exhibited at the National Museum of Ireland Country Life in Castlebar.

Anyone with objects they think might be of interest for the National Treasures project should log on to the National Treasures website https://nationaltreasures.ie click on the orange 'Add your object' button in the top right corner of the page. You can upload up to 3 photos/scans of each item, then write a few lines about why the item is important to you, what it is, and what story it tells. Photos taken against a plain background in daylight are best, with the object in the middle.

If you are submitting an item then please also email it to lindalogan@ymail.com so she can make sure all the items from Northern Ireland are in the archive, and make sure people are invited to the roadshow.

Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think would be interested in participating in this unique project to ensure that the culture and history of Northern Ireland is well represented in the archive.

If anyone has any queries or needs any help with how to upload their items then they can email Linda Logan or call her on 07427 570260.
