Social Care in Crisis

Published on 10 November 2017 12:00 PM

Older people are telling us they are finding it increasingly difficult to get the care and help they need to remain at home and as independent as possible.

Age NI believes that Northern Ireland's social care system is in crisis and we are deeply concerned about its future.

The family of George Stewart (78) were asked to help organise their own care package (video above).

Duane Farrell, Age NI Charity Director, who was on BBC Newsline recently to discuss this case, said:

'It doesn't make sense, when the government is saying care at home is the best place to provide somebody's care, that the infrastructure to be able to do just that is simply not there.'

'We are particularly concerned if, in cases like Mr Stewart, families are being asked to contribute to the cost of care packages upfront.'

If you, or someone close to you, is not getting the care and help they need, contact the Age NI Advice and Advocacy Service on freephone 0808 808 7575.
