We are looking for Cancer Peer Advocates volunteers; you will need to be a good listener, aged over 50 with some knowledge of cancer related issues and want to support an older person affected by cancer.

We provide training, regular support and expenses. Ideally we will need a flexible time commitment of between 2 – 4 hours weekly.

We recognise the additional needs for the support of cancer patients from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Communities (LGBT).

We aim to be fully inclusive and welcome the contribution and involvement of volunteers from these communities.

If you are interested in being involved we are also looking for local Cancer Champions, who will sit on our board, promote the service, and influence delivery, feeding into the National Cancer Champions Board regularly.

To get involved or to find out more please contact Deborah McGarrity, Cancer Support Advocate, Karen Renner, Volunteer Co-ordinator or Susan Chrisp, Case Support Officer tel 01670 784800 or email macmillan@ageuk-northumberland.org.uk.

Our Scheme is part of the national Cancer, Older People and Advocacy (COPA) project led by the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance (OPAAL) and is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support. You can visit the official COPA blog here.
