Experts by Experience

Age UK is delivering part of the Experts by Experience Programme for the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Our management of this project allows us to continue our work supporting and representing the views of older people living in care homes and using other regulated services.

Experts by Experience (Experts) are people from all walks of life who have experience of using health and social care services. Experts support CQC, working alongside their Inspectors on inspections of services such as care homes and hospitals. They help gather the experiences and views of people using those services, and are asked to submit brief reports to CQC Inspectors afterwards.

Working alongside a consortium of organisations

Experts by Experience are recruited, trained and supported by a number of different voluntary sector organisations, including Age UK. We work as part of a consortium of support organisations who provide Experts in the Central region of England (consisting of the West Midlands, East Midlands and East of England areas). This Central region consortium is led by Choice Support.

Age UK’s Experts are older people who are service users or the family carers of older people and people with dementia. Our particular contract is to provide ExE who:

  • are older people (aged over 50)
  • have recent (in the last five years) experience of health and/or social care services and
  • may have long term health conditions or early stage dementia or
  • have similar experience, but as the principle carer for an older person who regularly uses health and/or social care services.

Giving older people a voice

The Experts programme is an opportunity to bring older people into the heart of the services they need and use. It is crucial their voices are listened to in ensuring health and social care services are properly regulated.

The scheme currently provides over 70 roles for older people and their carers as Experts by Experience within the Central region of England.

All Experts who take part in inspections are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

We are not currently recruiting for Experts by Experience, but should you wish to express your interest, find out more about the role, or would like any other information, please contact ageukexpertsbyexperience@ageuk.org.uk.
