Dementia Friendly Programme

The Dementia Friendly programme was an extension to the BIG Lottery funded Fit as a Fiddle programme. This project has now come to an end after providing support and training to local Age UKs to transform their mainstream services to become more dementia friendly.

This programme supported and enabled local Age UKs to assess how dementia friendly their generic and wellbeing services were, what could be done to make these services more accessible, and what additional physical and wellbeing services could be developed. Age UK commissioned two experienced consultants to lead this work.

Although the funding for this project has come to an end, the transformation of services and support provided throughout the course of the project means that local Age UKs continue to be more accessible to everyone.

How did the project make a difference?

  • New approaches to working with people with dementia have been adopted, and to the design and delivery of services.
  • Cultural changes are taking place with increased awareness of dementia amongst Age UK staff and volunteers.
  • Local Age UKs disseminate learning to their network, and joined their local dementia action alliance.
