Housing for Older Veterans

Housing for Older Veterans

If you are over 65 and served in the armed forces - then this guide is for you. Find out about the kinds of support you could get to live independently in your own home or other housing arrangements for veterans.

Our Housing for Older Veterans Guide provides information about the options available, whether you need to move in the near future, or are planning ahead. Those who are veterans may be eligible for extra help to stay in their own home or to move to a more suitable one. Information about support and entitlements for older veterans and their dependants is included in the guide.

This guide has been developed by the Age Scotland Veterans’ Project and the Housing Options Scotland Military Matters project.

Who qualifies as a veteran?

It doesn’t matter how long ago, or for how long, you served - if it was for a day or more then you are a veteran.

You may have had a military career, a short period of national service, been a reservist, or even supported a military operation with the merchant navy - all of these occupations make you a veteran.

It is important to be aware of the different kinds of service that qualify you as a veteran, as you or an older person you know could be able to get support as a veteran without realising that it's available!
