New energy price cap "good news" but scots can save more by switching tariffs before christmas

6 November 2018

Following news of Ofgem rolling out a new energy price cap that is expected to save UK customers nearly £1 billion in consumer bills, the national charity for older people is welcoming the news and encouraging older people to save more by changing tariffs before Christmas.

The energy price cap will give 11 million in the UK a fairer deal from 1 January 2019. Direct debit customers on default tariffs will save around £76 on average with Scottish Power customers receiving the biggest saving at £120.

The news is promising for older people living in Scotland, who are impacted by high energy rates. Research conducted by Age Scotland found that almost six in ten single pensioners and four in ten pensioner couples live in fuel poverty in Scotland – with those in rural areas most affected.

Age Scotland’s Chief Executive Brian Sloan said:

“The new Ofgem energy price cap is good news for Scotland’s older people. We know that nearly half of all older Scots have trouble heating their homes in their winter months, which impacts their health – putting them at greater risk of illness and even death while worsening heart disease, respiratory infections and dementia. There is a solution and support is available to Scotland’s older people.”

The charity’s research highlights that four in ten Scots are not claiming the pension credit they are due. Age Scotland warns that this could mean they are also missing out on Cold Weather Payments and Warm Home discounts.

Brian said: “There are two easy ways older people can save even more on their energy bills this year. One: Phone our Freephone helpline on 0800 12 44 222 to get a benefits check. Many older people don’t realise the amount of money available to them to help heat their homes during the tough winter months. Two: Check your energy tariffs with an unbiased energy expert. Impartial services like Citrus Energy will speak with you over the phone and will advise you on the most effective providers and tariffs that suit you.

With just a couple of phone calls you can save even more in time for the Christmas season and bitter winter months.”
