Reconnect over Afternoon Tea

13 August 2020

A quick social media search will confirm that there has been an explosion in the popularity of Afternoon Tea in recent years. It’s no wonder really, given the 165 million cups of tea we drink each day in the UK.

Afternoon Tea Week runs from 10-16 August and, like most events in 2020, things are a little different this year. While some venues are open to enjoy treats, tea and tipples, others will be opting for takeaway and delivery alternatives.

With lockdown easing and shielding paused, the ability to get together seems like more of a luxury than ever. That’s why we think this year’s Afternoon Tea Week is not just an opportunity to enjoy some tea and cakes (although it’s definitely a bonus), but also a chance to reach out and reconnect with older friends, relatives and neighbours.

Come together this weekend to celebrate this tradition to suit all ages - make someone’s day by surprising them with an afternoon tea at home or have a get together in the garden or via video call with those who live further away – that way, you can make it as fancy or casual as you like!

There's no reason to confine celebrations to just one week either. Take advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme next week and beyond to spend quality time with an older friend or family member.

To add a fundraising aspect to your event, why not plan a Time to Talk Tea Party for Age Scotland? It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with people you might not have seen for a long time, while at the same time raising money for some of the most vulnerable older people in society.

Get in touch with family, friends or colleagues, and find a time to settle down with a cup of tea, have a blether and know that you are helping Age Scotland be there for older people at a time they need it most.

Sign up to host a Time to Talk Tea Party today and we will send you a free fundraising pack with recipes and easy ways to get connected together online.

Every £10 raised will pay for two of our lifeline friendship calls. Lockdown has had a profound impact on older people, and a friendly chat with one of our advisers can turn around a bad day for someone who was feeling low.

Text AGESCOTTEA to 70085 to give £10. (Texts cost £10 plus one standard rate message) or donate online here.

Don’t forget to tell us all about your tea party online using #TimeToTalkTeaParty.
