Young Newton Mearns fundraiser going the distance for Age Scotland

22 May 2020

Age Scotland has praised the efforts of a young fundraiser from Newton Mearns who has embarked on a 100km cycling challenge.

14-year-old Shreyas Nekkare has set himself the challenge of cycling 100km over 10 days to help raise vital funds to support older people in need during COVID-19 and beyond.

Scotland’s national charity for older people has been ‘overwhelmed and inspired’ by the number of younger people voicing concerns about the impact of coronavirus on those who are older, and coming up with innovative ways to raise awareness and funds to help them.

Asked why he decided to support Age Scotland, Shreyas, said:

"In this unexpected long pandemic, I felt older, and more vulnerable people were the worst hit and hence thought that every little help would be appreciated. It would feel as if I have been able to do something for my grandparents living far away in India."

Since the pandemic began, Age Scotland’s free Helpline has seen an unprecedented surge in calls from older people seeking advice and information, including how to get essential food supplies and medical prescriptions.

Loneliness and isolation is also an area of serious concern, with at least one third of the calls received coming from older people who just want someone to talk to.

Age Scotland’s Chief Executive, Brian Sloan, said:

“The generosity, kindness and compassion shown by fundraisers like Shreyas has been amazing during what has undoubtedly been a difficult time for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of older people.

“More young people than ever are reaching out to Age Scotland, looking for ways to get involved, volunteer and fundraise to help older people who may be feeling anxious, isolated and lonely as a result of continuing lockdown and shielding measures.

“Just £10 raised will pay for two friendship calls to older people and could make all the difference to someone's life – a friendly chat with one of our advisers can help turn a bad day around for someone feeling low.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to Shreyas, from all of us at Age Scotland – your efforts will help ensure we can provide information, advice and friendship to each older person who needs it. We wish you all the best for completing your challenge!”
