Blog: World Mental Health Day 2020

9 October 2020

This year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impact this virus has had on older people’s wellbeing has been profound, from the drastic reduction in social interaction to anxieties about receiving the necessary medical treatment and being asked to shield or self-isolate for extensive periods of time – not to mention managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye.

Research from Santander has shown that almost three quarters (71%) of over-55s struggled with the lockdown and four in ten adults noticed a deterioration in the health and wellbeing of older relatives.

It’s important that we all stick to official advice about staying at home and reducing social contact – but that doesn’t mean you have to get through things alone.

You’ve got a friend in us

Our free friendship line is a place where older people can turn if they are in need of support, comfort and reassurance or even just a friendly chat. For those who find it difficult to tell loved ones how they are feelings, or who might not have anyone else to turn to, our experienced advisers are on hand to listen and have a blether.

At a time when it is more important than ever for older people to feel valued and connected, our calls can be a lifeline for those who are feeling alone. Just having a chat or a friendly ear to listen can make all the difference.

Signing up for weekly friendship calls can also offer a sense of routine that’s especially welcome during stressful times and give people something to look forward to.

With lockdown measures increasing this week, it’s clear that we’ll be facing the after effects of this pandemic for a long time to come. In times of uncertainty, one thing is guaranteed - you always have a friend in us.

We’re delighted to have recently welcomed a host of new volunteers to our dedicated team. So, if you or anyone you know fancies a weekly chat, our friendship line is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. It’s free to call on 0800 12 44 222. We look forward to hearing from you.

Support and resources

With COVID-19 affecting almost every aspect of daily life, it’s ok not to feel yourself right now. Thankfully, the Clear Your Head campaign from the Scottish Government offers some great tips and resources to help you navigate these feelings of worry and uncertainty.

Visit their website for ideas about how you can keep moving and active, create a routine, find things you enjoy, reach out to those around you and keep connected with friends and family.

We need to address the stigma which still exists around older people talking about how they feel about poor mental health in later life. Older people don’t want to feel like a burden and that in itself sometimes stops people from getting the help that they need. It can be difficult to express how we feel about growing older.

To help, we have produced guides covering different aspects of mental health and keeping well.

Anyone who needs urgent support can call Samaritans on 116 123. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
