Blog: Burns Night? Age Scotland's Community Development team has it in the bag

24 January 2021

We know lots of folk will be missing their traditional Burns suppers tonight. In fact, many Age Scotland members would usually be looking forward to sitting down to haggis, neeps and tatties together.

To help make sure they were still able to celebrate the occasion, our Community Development team have been hard at work creating Age Scotland’s ‘Burns in a Bag’ packs.

Collaborating with Edinburgh City Council’s Adult Learning Team, we were able to include a special “Guid Fer a Laugh” booklet featuring Scots language information and activities based around Burns.

It has been a lovely opportunity to connect with our Age Scotland member groups at a time when meeting in person is still some time away. We hope this pack has offered something tangible to build their own event around and, as the packs were available in printed format, we've made sure that those without internet access are included.

3,000 braw “Burns in a Bag” packs have now been delivered, ready to help our member groups celebrate the bard from the comfort and safety of their own homes.

“Wow, the bags and books are amazing! They’re going to love them with their haggis neeps n tatties, dumpling, irn bru and shortbread on the 25th!” - Tarbert Soup Group

“Just to let you know that the Bags & Booklets arrived today. Really very nice, and I am sitting here reading the poems - keeping a tear from my e’en! (My Dad lived in the Dumfries area when a schoolboy, and loved Burns, and the ‘Auld Scots tongue’!). Some Scots words I use today - I grew up with!!” - Tuesday Social Club, Fort William

Digital version of the packs are available here.
