More WCAA speakers confirmed

More speakers have been confirmed for the 8th World Congress on Active Ageing, taking place in Glasgow from the 13th to the 17th of August 2012. 
Afternoon Monday 13th August
Professor David Buchner - (USA) - Guidelines for Physical Activity in Older People. David Buchner is director of the ‘Master of Public Health' program (Kinesiology and Community Health) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 
Dr Buchner completed his Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1974, his Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.) at the University of Kansas; Kansas City, in 1977 and completed a Master's in Public Health (M.P.H.) at the University of Washington, Seattle in 1984.
He is a geriatrician who studies physical activity in adults, particularly older adults. His past research focused on the role of physical activity in preventing loss of age-related function in older adults. This research included the role of exercise programs in reducing risk of fall injuries in older adults. He participated in research on the effects of physical activity in older adults with cognitive impairment, and was co-developer of an evidence-based exercise program in older adults. 
Dr. Buchner sees his work as contributing to keeping older adults healthy, and reducing the high burden of chronic disease those in later life experience. He is interested in both how physical activity provides health benefits, and in the role of policy and environmental interventions in promoting physical activity.

Professor Waneen Spirduso - (USA) - Physical Activity, Wellbeing and Quality of Life as we age.
Waneen Spirduso is a professor of movement science in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Texas, Austin.
Dr Spirduso completed her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education at the University of Texas, Austin in 1957, her Master's degree in Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1958, and her Ph.D. in Motor Control and Learning at the University of Texas, Austin in 1966.
Dr Spirduso's research interests include:  Relationships between aerobic fitness and cognitive function in the elderly, exercise dose-response effects on quality of life and independent living in older adults, and gender differences in sports performance and power with ageing. 
Morning Tuesday 14th August
Dr Jennifer Etnier (picture) - (USA) - Physical Activity in the Prevention and Management of Dementia. 
Jennifer Etnier is a professor of sport and exercise psychology in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Dr. Etnier completed her Bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, her Master's degree in exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Ph.D. in sport and exercise psychology at Arizona State University. 
Her research interests lie in the field of Exercise Psychology with her primary research focus on the area of physical activity and cognition. In particular, Dr. Etnier is interested in the potential benefits of physical activity for the slowing of age-related cognitive decline and for the prevention of dementia. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the ‘Journal of Aging and Physical Activity'.Tweet
