Transport
Age Scotland believes that Scotland’s transport system must work for older people if it is to be fit for purpose.
Transport is a crucial tool for tackling loneliness and isolation.
Throughout 2018, Age Scotland undertook a major process of consultation with Scotland’s older people on their transport needs. Working in partnership with Transport Scotland (the Scottish Government’s transport agency), we led 21 workshops for older people around Scotland where they could share their thoughts on transport. We also collected older people’s views on transport in a questionnaire.
The primary purpose of this consultation was to ensure that older people’s voices were heard in the process of shaping the new National Transport Strategy (NTS2) – a government strategic document which will shape transport decisions in Scotland for the next two decades.
Age Scotland produced a summary report of our findings after speaking to hundreds of older people right across Scotland.
The new, completed National Transport Strategy (NTS2) was laid before the Scottish Parliament on 5 February 2020.
The information we gathered from older people during the NTS Review process is also shaping our policy positions on transport more broadly, including the Transport (Scotland) Bill which was recently passed by the Scottish Parliament.
