Call in Time

Free friendship calls for the over 60s

An award-winning service, offering regular conversation and companionship for lonely older people.

Refer someone

We all need someone to talk to, someone who listens and someone who cares.

Many older people – particularly those who live alone – find themselves going days without taking to anyone. Loneliness is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is associated with a range of health conditions, such as depression, sleep problems and hypertension.

A friendly, weekly, 30-minute chat on the phone can make all the difference.

How the service works

Call in Time is a free telephone friendship service run by Age UK for people aged 60 and over.

Our service matches older people with fully trained and supported volunteers who share their interests for a weekly friendship call, at a time that suits them. It's a great opportunity to enjoy regular chats with a new friend and both the older people and our volunteers tell us how much they look forward to their calls.

"I got in touch with Age UK and it was the best thing I've done in my life"

Roy, 85, talks about how Age UK's Call in Time service helped him cope with his bereavement.

It’s safe and secure

  • Our technology connects the older person to their telephone friend, so they will never have to give out their personal number.
  • Volunteers undergo a full safety check
  • All calls are recorded and we listen to samples to check our service remains of the highest quality.

My friend is wonderful and we talk about all kinds of things - she really lights up my day with her chats. I love hearing about her holidays and her family - and we are always finding new things we have in common.

Who is Call in Time for?

Call in Time is perfect for anyone 60 or over who would benefit from regular conversations over the phone.

Call in Time may not be suitable for people living with memory loss, dementia, or mental health issues that require a higher-level of support, as these conditions may affect the person's ability to build a telephone friendship with a volunteer. In some instances, people with these conditions may find the calls distressing.
