‘Angel through the door’

04 January 2016

When the service you provide is likened to “an angel coming through the door” you know it’s highly valued.

That is exactly how Age UK Sheffield’s Independent Living Co-ordinator (ILC) service is described by Sally Kilic from Gleadless, who is the main carer for her mother, Rose.Age UK Sheffield got involved with Sally and Rose – who also has dementia - through our partnership with MacMillan Cancer Care.

Sally said: “When mum was first diagnosed, it was frightening for her and for me, because I didn’t know anything about breast cancer, or how to care for someone with cancer.

“But after Age UK Sheffield got involved, I went from being a frightened daughter to somebody who felt confident in the knowledge that if I needed any questions answered, I knew exactly where to go.

”We had so much support and nothing was too much trouble. It made life a lot easier for us.”

Age UK Sheffield’s ILC service provides holistic assessments at home to support older people in regaining and maintaining their independence. It links more than 1,000 people to resources that enable independent living each year.

Sandra Clarkson, Macmillan Development Manager (Sheffield), said: “The holistic assessment which identifies the needs of both the person affected by cancer and carers is crucial in enabling the package of support to be personalised and tailored – meeting their needs.

“This then is much more likely to result in a positive experience and directly impact their quality of life for the better.

“Macmillan Cancer Support working with Age UK Sheffield has been a real synergy and highlights the huge benefits of organisations working in partnership together for the single aim of supporting people affected by cancer.’’
